NEW YORK, NY – June 2011 – Adirée, is pleased to announced that Suakoko Betty will showcase at Africa Fashion Week New York. AFWNY is set to take place on July 14th, 15th and 16th at the Broad Street Ballroom in New York City’s financial district.
Suakoko (SWAH-ko-ko) Betty transforms authentic West African wax and resist-dye prints into trendy, modern designs. “Suakoko” means a place of new beginnings and is also name of renowned female warrior-chief in Liberia. Consequently, Suakoko Betty is taking lead and breaking barriers. Each garment unique, hand dyed in Liberia providing resources for those in need, and hand made in the USA.
AFWNY includes runway shows hosting 21+ designers from various countries in Africa and those of the African Diaspora, exhibitions, and industry networking events. Opening designer Korto Momolu and designers like Washington Roberts, Saint Wobil, AAMAA Couture, Bill Witherspoon and others will showcase. Sponsors include MO SAÏQUE and AVEYOU.com.
About Charlene Bendu Dunbar
Designer Charlene Bendu Dunbar spent her childhood in Atlanta and her hometown, Monrovia in Liberia. Charlene has an engineering degree and earned a bachelors degree in Fashion Design from American Intercontinental University in Buckhead. She has worked with Reco Chapple of House of Chapple. Dunbar launched Suakoko Betty in 2007 and was named the 2010 Designer of the Year by the Liberian Entertainment Awards.
