Africa Fashion Week Designers Help Students Find Their “FIT” in Fashion

NEW YORK, NY – July 2011 – Africa Fashion Week New York’s designers will speak at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City Wednesday, July 13th. AFWNY will take place at the Broad Street Ballroom on July 14th, 15th, 16th in New York City’s Financial District.
Five AFWNY designers have been selected to speak at FIT to aspiring fashion students. The designers are Funlayo Deri, Gloria WavaMunno, KikoRomeo, AsakeOge Couture, and Josefa Dasilva. Accompanying the designers is AFWNY’s founder and director, Adiat Disu. The designers will discuss their designs, aesthetic, and inspirations. The discussion will include the designer’s struggles and major accomplishments. Disu will share her life as a young entrepreneur in New York City. Through this discussion, students will understand and learn about African culture and fashion in honor AFWNY (July 12th to July 18th), proclaimed by Mayor Michael Bloomberg of New York City.
AFWNY includes runway shows hosting 21+ designers from various countries in Africa and those of the African Diaspora, exhibitions, and industry networking events. Opening designer Korto Momolu and designers like Washington Roberts, Saint Wobil, AAMAA Couture, Bill Witherspoon and others will showcase. Sponsors include PopDrum, Mo-Saique, AveYou, Makari de Suisse, John Ashford, Renarda Joy, and Avaloni Studios.
